Abu Dhabi receives FINA flag to host 2020 Short Course World Championship
Abu Dhabi received the flag of hosting the 2020 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships at the conclusion of the 14th staging of the world event in Hangzhou, China, last week.
Ahmed Al Qubaisi, Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s Director of Marketing and Events, representing the host city received along with officials of the UAE Swimming Federation received the flag in Hangzhou.
The Short Course World Championship is returning to the UAE after Dubai hosted it in 2010, but Abu Dhabi will be hosting it for the first time. The short course championship is held once in two years.
“The event hosted by Abu Dhabi will have a significant impact as it falls in an Olympic year,” said Al Qubaisi.
Abu Dhabi won the bid to host the FINA event in Kazan, Russia in 2015, after seeing off the competitions from the Peruvian capital Lima and the Kazakhstan city Almaty.
“The work in hosting the world short course championship had started even before we received the championship flag at the Chinese city of Hangzhou,” added Al Qubaisi.
“We are coordinating the work and the preparations with both FINA and the UAE Swimming Federation. We have set up the operational plans and the scheduling of the work and preparations for a successful staging of the event.”
